A 2-day Toubkal trek is one of the most popular short treks in Morocco. Mount Toubkal (Jebel Toubkal), at 4,167 meters (13,671 ft), is the highest peak in North Africa and can be summited in just two days from Marrakech if you’re reasonably fit. Here’s a breakdown of the standard itinerary:

Day 1 of the Toubkal trek begins with a scenic drive from Marrakech to the mountain village of Imlil, located at 1,740 meters in the heart of the High Atlas Mountains. From Imlil, the trek sets off on foot, passing through traditional Berber villages like Aroumd and following the beautiful Mizane Valley. As the trail gradually ascends, the landscape transforms from terraced fields and walnut groves to more rugged, alpine terrain. After approximately 5 to 6 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the Toubkal Refuge at 3,207 meters, where you’ll spend the night. The air gets cooler, and the dramatic mountain views become more striking, offering a preview of the challenge ahead. The evening is typically spent resting, enjoying a warm meal, and preparing for the early morning summit attempt on Day 2.

Day 2 begins early, usually before sunrise, as you set out from the Toubkal Refuge for the final ascent to the summit of Mount Toubkal. The climb is steep and physically demanding, taking about 3 to 4 hours, but the reward is extraordinary: panoramic views over the Atlas Mountains and, on clear days, even the distant Sahara Desert. After taking time to enjoy the summit at 4,167 meters—the highest point in North Africa—you begin the descent back to the refuge, which takes around 2 hours. Following a short rest and a meal, you continue the trek downhill to Imlil, a journey of about 4 to 5 hours. From Imlil, a driver will return you to Marrakech, arriving by late afternoon. Though physically intense, Day 2 is incredibly fulfilling, offering both a sense of achievement and unforgettable mountain scenery.
